Sermon notes Romans 8:14-19
Firstly, I want to apologise for not posting recently. It has been an exciting period in my life, but also a very busy one.

Romans 8:14-19
14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. 15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.[a] And by him we cry, “Abba,[b] Father.” 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.
Present Suffering and Future Glory
18 I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. 19 For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed.
Intro
· Story about two boys. One grows up feeling inadequate because he can never please his father/boss? The other grows up knowing they are loved by their parent and grows up confident and strong and free to make choices (Feeling like if I mess up I will be reprimanded I do not have the freedom to act. If I take a risk to do something, the risk that it fails is so great that not only will I fail but I will have let down my parent. )
· The message is God is your Good father
Know God
· Psychologists have a term called Self disclosure
o To know someone you have to let them reveal themselves to you

· Do you know God?

· How do we know God? Through his word by the Holy Spirit – How He reveals himself to us
o The Spirit you received brought about your adoption
§ 15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.[a] And by him we cry, “Abba,[b] Father.”
What God isn’t vs what God is
· You see an important distinction – Spirit does not make you slaves but sons
· God is not your slave master/boss. God is your father (Story about 2 boys?)
· workers do not get an inheritance
o Thinking of God as your boss leads you to fear
§ Works – I am worthy because of what I have done
§ Standard I can’t live up to
§ Dishonour and disappointment
o Knowing God as your father leads you to joy and hope
§ Loved – I am loved for nothing other than being their child
§ Abba father
· More than just “daddy”
· Shows respect and reverence
· Closeness and intimacy
· How else does God identify himself? 4 other ways God identifies himself
· Provider not a bank
§ Karma approach to life
§ Bank makes us think blessings will come we earn enough credit
o Provider
o 1 Corinthians 8:6 6 yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.
§ God as our provider leads us to trust him
§ Not get upset when things don’t go our way
§ James 1:17 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

· Why has this bad thing happened to me? I don’t deserve this
§ What this verse really says is every good thing comes from God!
§ I have breathe in my lungs, praise God!
§ I get home tonight and can lay down in bed healthy? Praise God
· Shield and protector, not your attacker
o David understood this clearly
o Psalm 22 6 But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by everyone, despised by the people. 7 All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads.8 “He trusts in the Lord,” they say, “let the Lord rescue him. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him.”
o Seeing God as your attacker leads you to believe
§ God is hurting you
§ Withholding from you
§ Tempting you
§ James 1:1313 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone;
§ Ancient Greeks believed. Gods were looming, lightning bolt
o Protector

· Maturer vs indulger
o God gives us what we need, he is not a genie
o John 15:1-2 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes[a] so that it will be even more fruitful.
o Problem western world has with God is life is tough
o Gods role is to provide me
§ Comfort

§ Protect every bad thing from happening to me

· 2 Corinthians 11:23 -27I have worked much harder, been in prison more frequently, been flogged more severely, and been exposed to death again and again. 24 Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. 25 Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was pelted with stones, three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a night and a day in the open sea, 26 I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my fellow Jews, in danger from Gentiles; in danger in the city, in danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false believers. 27 I have labored and toiled and have often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food; I have been cold and naked.
§ If God is there to protect me from the storm, when the storm comes my view of God will crumble
§ The Christian whose family member gets cancer leaves God
o God as the good father who matures his children

· Adoption - Interestingly, according to a Roman-Syrian lawbook, a man might be able to disown his biological son if he had good reason, but he could never disown his adopted son.

-Firstly thanks for the clarification about been slaves to God and sins. That those who are lead by the Spirits are not slaves to God but HIS children👌
-Also the way we see God shapes the manner in which we think of HIM. As a boss or bank🤗,otherwise we will think that our works deserves a reward👏👏 .. But there's a say that anything we do,we do to ourselves right?if we do good,we will receive good things likewise bad,does it apply there?
-Again we should give thanks to God in everything, nothing is little,cus we often feel that we can do basic things by our own power but God is involved in all, even blinking our eyes,sitting,walking etc
-This got me,Pray all the time not necessarily when need arises,i personally pray harder when things are bad,i feel like God must answer me right now hahahh...
-Almost last take away🤩, always go to God no matter what and not run away from him,At times when i mess up,i feel reluctant praying😥.
The list continu etc ...All the examples you coated were super and related to life which were much more understandable 👌
-Have a doubt though.... You said something like, if i heard well,if things are not going well ,it doesn't mean there is a problem? I mean how? ofcus something is wrong somewhere right?
-Lastly but not the least,which NIV version or type are you using let me purchase mine,i might have sense like you haha..
I watched your sermon! I love seeing people in our generation rise up to bear witness to God with grace and truth. God is speaking powerfully through you. Keep going Aodhan!
